Sep 11-14 Tue-Fri West Virginia Tour 2679

Wild & Wonderful

West Virginia

Mountain Music & Trains

Day 1…Elkins WV…We will arrive at our hotel to check in and have a brief rest before departing for dinner. After dinner you’re in for a treat at The Greatest Show on Rails. This is a 90 minute live show. Their show is like a virtual train trip across the US. With stops in places like Memphis where you’re entertained by Elvis, or Detroit with Aretha Franklin, or California with the Beach Boys. With plenty of stops to keep you entertained.

Cass Scenic Railroad Shay’s #5 and #4 double                      head through the town of Cass.

Day 2.The Cass Mountain Railway…is nestled in the mountains of West Virginia where we take an excursion that transports you back in time to relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. A visit to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in the mountainous area of WVA. This is where the largest fully steerable telescope in the country is located. At 485 feet tall and weighing 17 million pounds it’s the largest moving structure on land. It features clear optics and a computer controlled reflecting surface of 2.3 acres in area! It is fast becoming one of the county’s most popular destinations for individuals and groups of all ages!

Day 3…We need to be at the train depot at 10:30.  The New Tygart Flyer leaves from the restored station at 11 am.  This train ride features two separate mountain grades: an “S” curve tunnel, passage into a 1,500 feet deep canyon with steep, densely forested slopes; and a high bridge over the rushing Shavers Fork of the Cheat River. A cold sandwich lunch buffet is served on the outbound trip and cookies or brownies for dessert on the inbound trip.  Dinner tonight is at the Gandy Dancer Theatre…where we will sit down to a meal while enjoying a brand new show, Branson Style.

Day 4…We have pack

ed a lot into this tour and today is no exception.   This morning we return to the Gandy Dancer Theatre for a one hour tribute to Musical Legends. Then the journey home will take us through the beautiful rugged and wild Monongahela National Forest. Here you will get a glimpse of the wild side of West Virginia. Along the way we will see a little of the technical side, with the large windmill farms high on the mountains that we will pass close by.

Provided we are  on schedule we will make stops at the Candyland stores on our route.  On the way down we can get some candy to ease your sweet tooth, and since they also offer good deals on fruit as well perhaps we can get some bargains on fruit on the way back.
