Tour # 1719
Here is a tour with fantastic scenery, great caves, and an unusual potato chip factory that makes potato chips with vegetable flavors. You will be amazed at their sweet potato chips.
Luray Caverns, Luray VA
Luray Caverns...Since their discovery in 1878 by a tinsmith and a local photographer, visitors by the millions have made Luray Caverns the most popular cave in Eastern America and an internationally acclaimed destination.
Approximately 4,000,000 centuries in the making beneath Virginia's storied Shenandoah Valley, this "must see" U.S. Natural Landmark awaits your discovery. One hour tours, from well-lighted, paved walkways lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings10 stories high. Enormous chambers are filled with towering columns, shimmering draperies and crystal-clear pools. Also in this subterranean wonderland, "Hear Rocks Sing" as you experience the haunting sounds of the world's largest musical instrument, The Great Stalacpipe Organ. Completely unique are the beautiful tones created by this one-of-a-kind instrument, which makes music of concert quality from the surrounding stalactite formations covering more than three acres.
Luray Caverns, for more than 125 years, has been renowned as one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. A world of magic and majesty, still as marvelously beautiful as described in the newspaper headlines over a century ago.
Skyline Drive VA
Remember when driving was fun and relaxing? No? Well, a slow meandering ride in a motorcoach down Skyline Drive will give you a whole new experience. The Skyline Drive runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park and is the only public road through the park. It takes about three hours to travel the entire length of the Skyline Drive on a clear day.
As you travel along Skyline Drive you will notice mileposts on the west side (right side if you are traveling south) of the road. These posts help you find your way through the park and help you locate areas of interest. The largest developed area, Big Meadows, is near the center of the park, at milepost 51. All park maps and information use these mileposts as a reference. The maximum speed limit is 35 mph, so you can experience every curve and turn of this beautiful drive. There are 75 overlooks that offer stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west or the rolling piedmont to the east. The park purposely leaves the roadsides unmowed so wildflowers put on a show all year long. In early spring you can see trillium peeking through the grass. June's display of azaleas is spectacular, and cardinal flower, black-eyed susans, and goldenrod keep the color coming right into fall.
Deer, black bear, wild turkey, and a host of other woodland animals call Shenandoah home and regularly cross Skyline Drive in their daily travels. Watch carefully for these animals that may dart across our path without warning. As we travel slowly along Skyline Drive you may see exciting wildlife from our motorcoach.
Route 11 Potato Chips
Middletown VA...Rt 11 Potato Chips...Not too long ago, about 10 years to be exact, with lots of potatoes, good oil, salt, serendipity, and a little luck, Route 11 Potato Chips sprouted in an old feed store in Middletown, Virginia. They felt that their only purpose in that moment and many after, was that they produce the best potato chips on the planet. Chips they could be proud of. Chips, that with every potatoey crunch, would make you feel like you were experiencing something very special. Everything they make is hand-cooked. This is much more labor intensive than the continuous frying methods of the big boys, but the payoff in creating a product that is truly delicious, is worth all the effort. They hope you enjoy the chips as much as they do.
